What Sparked Your Wanderlust? Round 1

published on 08 June 2021

If you’re reading this, you’re probably just as restless as we are to get out and travel the world! With countries slowly opening up their borders and vaccination rates steadily rising, traveling in the new normal seems as close as ever!

But before we start planning our itineraries and packing up our OOTDs, we thought it would be great to look back at our experiences of encountering wanderlust for the first time!

Here are a few stories from our very own MiTravel team members on which trip sparked their wanderlust!

First, we have Muhammad, from the Development team!

After I graduated high school, I decided to use some of the money I saved up from working part-time at a pizza joint to travel. I chose to go to Norway to see my uncle. During my visit, he took me on trips to countries like Russia, Sweden, and Spain. It was then that I really was bitten by the travel bug. Undoubtedly, it was an amazing experience to go out to new places and see how different the way of life was!

For me, what really hooked me was breaking away from the environment I had known my whole life and getting to see things in a completely new environment. I also really enjoyed the actual travel of it all.

To me, wanderlust is about breaking away from the everyday to go out and about (to do something and see new places) while enjoying the journey we have today!

When I was around 6-7 years old, I got a chance to visit South Africa (Cape Town, Sun City, Kruger Park) and Mauritius. I cannot begin to tell you how this trip left a huge mark on my soul and fueled my wanderlust for the rest of my life thus far!

In just a week and a half, I experienced an entirely different culture, heard a variety of foreign languages for the first time and had an incredibly intense stare-off with a real-life lion! I had a whole new appreciation for the animal kingdom and for an amazing African culture that I knew so little about back then.

Wanderlust to me is that first wave of excitement you get when exiting an airport to a new city, it’s that uncontrollable desire to get out and explore. I like to think that traveling is like that first scoop of gelato, once you start, there’s no way you can stop!”

The first trip that sparked my wanderlust was a 2-week family vacation to Korea and Japan. It was my first time leaving North America, and my first time traveling by plane.

One experience that I’ll never forget, and one that especially makes me want to come back, was when I forgot my Shinkansen bullet train pass at an arcade! It was about 10-15 minutes when I realized I forgot it, and thankfully, when we returned back to the arcade, someone had already returned it to the front desk!

To me, wanderlust is more than just a strong desire to travel. It’s also the passion to learn about different cultures, peoples, ways of life, food, and so much more!
